About the speaker
CHERRISE TAN, SWET IMAGE PROFESSIONAL
SWET Senior Image Professional Cherrise Tan comes armed with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Huddersfield University, United Kingdom.  Cherrise is well known for her flair for style and dress and her famous skills in make-overs, make-up and hair-dos.   Her grooming tips were well received by her workshop participants from Carlsberg, the Maybank Group, OCBC, Allianz Life, Tokyo Marine, Dell, Tiffany & Co., Korman International, Amanah Raya, Jones Lang ,Wootton, MAA, Philip Wain, Uniten and others.
Her achievements involve training more than 500 Carlsberg sales professionals and speaking to 1000 beauty consultants at Mary Kay. Her other experiences include training catwalk models and beauty contestants for Mrs. Malaysia 2010.

My Batik Charity Workshop 2011

Synopsis:

Fun Batik Adventure For Underprivileged Kids

The objective of the event is to provide a fun day out for the underprivileged kids, as well as to expose them to the history of batik and a chance to learn the art of batik.”

My Batik Charity Workshop is a monthly affair, planned to be conducted and sponsored by TMS ART MARKETING SDN. BHD. at TMS Art Gallery & Café’ in National Textile Museum, on the first Saturday  of each month.  This program is for various orphanages and we hope to flourish the creativity amongst the underprivileged children.

Kuala Lumpur, October, 1, 2011 – We are privileged people but God has also left us with some responsibility and that is to take care of the ones who aren’t very privileged. Whose lives are difficult, since they day they have born because they are orphans. That’s why; TMS Art Marketing Sdn. Bhd. and Junior Chamber International Petaling Jaya (JCIPJ), in conjunction arranged a monthly “My Batik Charity Workshop” for these kids.

TMS Art Marketing Sdn. Bhd. had their first work shop on 1^st October, 2011 at 10 am in the beautiful premises of TMS Art Gallery & Café in the National Textile Museum. The event was headed by the CEO of TMS Art, Miss Emilia Tan and her colleagues. The kids arrived in Sunlight Taxis at sharp 10 am and were taken for a tour of the museum. Kids were offered Donuts, courtesy Big Apples. At 11 am, Batik workshop was started in which every child was given their own Pre-waxed Batik coloring and paints. Emilia, being a professional batik artist and entrepreneur herself, explained the basics of batik coloring to kids. She also said, “The main reason behind organizing this workshop is to see happiness on the faces of these children and to infuse batik culture in them as they could be the future ambassadors of Batik.”  Kids seemed to be really happy and they painted some beautiful stuff with amazing colors.

At 12 pm, kids were offered a scrumptious lunch by the café and were given fruit goodie bags, sponsored by MBG Fruits. Their paintings were given to them as a souvenir and their bright happy faces served the purpose of arranging this workshop. TMS Art Marketing would be arranging this event on every first Saturday of the month.

Entrepreneurial Artist: Emilia Tan

Born in Banting, in 1981, Emilia Tan has lived and worked in Kuala Lumpur since 2004, and began painting batik during her college days at the Malaysian Institute of Art. Inspired by creative thought and action, Emilia’s business grounding came through her little batik workshop, aptly named TMS ART where she paints and sells batik and conducts batik workshops daily. Her kaleidoscopic,

abstract impressionist art embraces painting and installation – but batik is her usual starting point. Today, this genre is a thriving and legitimate art form, with many artists making a living selling their creations both individually and through formal groups. TMS ART provides batik artists with an opportunity to support themselves financially while nurturing their own cultural traditions. The artists learn to apply their artistic skills to create products that appeal to international and domestic markets.

Emilia has taken the lessons learned in building TMS ART and through developing a market-driven network model, applied it at an industry-wide level. The company’s handmade batik products –clothing, fashion accessories, home furnishings and traditional Malaysian crafts – are marketed locally and globally and sold to customers and retailers. Each year, TMS ART introduces new product lines at local trade shows and reaches customers worldwide via its gallery and website. Clients include Oil & Gas Company HESS & PETRONAS and renowned property developer, Cahaya SPK as well as world-renowned pewter brand, Royal Selangor.

Focused on driving creative development through demand, TMS ART is a “proof of concept” creative enterprise, an art project, a job creation programme and cooperative management system that initially brought together two distinct fields – fashion and art. TMS ART has not only revolutionized the batik industry in Malaysia, but also grown the business of its artists and lifted the status of these crafts into art forms assigning proper aesthetic and economic value. By creating innovative and formal systems of craft development, team cooperative manufacturing, quality control and marketing to local and international audiences, TMS ART ensures the producers a fair price for their art, making it the first batik organization in Malaysia to engage and connect all batik stakeholders together through a magazine called myBatik.

In August 2011, Emilia decided to experiment with a new concept in selling batik art by opening an art cafe in National Textile Museum Malaysia. A cafe that shows art by artists is nothing new; a museum space that has a cafe on one side and a full-service art gallery on the other, is definitely something new. Inspired by this experiment in art retailing, she plans to attract a number of people who do not ordinarily visit art galleries, but once at her gallery, find themselves in a comfortable and non-intimidating space full of art while enjoying traditional Malaysian delicacies like nasi lemak and multi-ethnic pastries. This creates an atmosphere conducive to selling art to people who have never before been in art-buying situations. A strong believer in creative entrepreneurship, Emilia Tan has worked hard to ensure that TMS ART is a true hybrid creative/business enterprise.

The primary aim of TMS ART is to be an innovative leader in the batik field, creating sustainable, meaningful long-term employment opportunities and supporting batik artists, writers and suppliers. This aim is realized through the creation of an organization that is driven by marketing through myBatik magazine and other batik events. Building on the power of community, myBatik distils the success of TMS ART to create an organization that, through building a network with a core of project management and marketing excellence, will have an impact on an industry-wide scale. myBatik sets the company’s broader social and community development goals in terms of skills training, individual artist development and a series of outreach initiatives in non-profit organizations, schools and impoverished communities.
